  7. Greetings and welcome to the fourth edition of the QRZ Ham Radio CDROM.

  9. This edition contains new FCC callsign databases (last updated on 1
  10. Nov 94) and a huge new selection of popular amateur radio shareware.
  11. With the new shareware collection, it's our largest disc ever.  You
  12. get new files in nearly every area.

  16. *** Callsign Database Update ***
  17.  
  18. The FCC has completely changed their computer system and as a result
  19. we have some new data online.  For the first time, the FCC lists the
  20. registered US amateur radio clubs.  I added this new category to the
  21. main database.  However, due to a last minute change in format, the
  22. club names were replaced by the name of the club's trustee.
  23.  
  24. The next edition will properly display the actual club name along
  25. with the callsign of the club's trustee.  For example, if you look up
  26. W1AW you'll see the name David Sumner instead of THE AMERICAN RADIO
  27. RELAY LEAGUE (David Sumner is currently the president of the League).
  28. The address for the club listings are correct as shown.  There is no
  29. way to retrieve the actual club name in this edition.

  31. Also new in this edition (thanks to the FCC's new database) is the
  32. listing of registered alien (foreign) amateurs operating in the US.
  33. If you select Callsign Search and use the scrollbar to move to the
  34. far left end of the database you'll see very unusual callsigns and
  35. their US addresses.  Most of these operators have a 1 year authority
  36. to operate while in the United States.  There are many more alien
  37. callsigns than are shown at the beginning of the listing, since they
  38. are spread out all over the database.

  40. There has been an update to the Italian callsigns.  We received the
  41. callsigns in a format which had their first and last names both in
  42. the same record.  This made it necessary for us to manually separate
  43. the names into first-name/last-name pairs.  In some cases it was
  44. difficult for us to determine which was the first name and which was
  45. the last name of the operator.  We did the first/last name separation
  46. by a computer program and then extensively edited the output by hand
  47. (that's over 32,000 names to check!).  Since some names have several
  48. parts (like Georgio Antonio Di Martino) our program was unable to
  49. tell precisely where to make the split.  We did the best we could
  50. (given our total lack of experience with Italian names) and we
  51. apologize to those whose names we didn't separate correctly.

  53. And speaking of names, the US callsign database as supplied by the
  54. FCC no longer separates the middle initial from the first name.
  55. Because of this, you'll see the operator's middle initial printed
  56. next to their first name, without a comma in between.  In addition,
  57. the same suffix (such as JR, SR, III, etc.) is printed as part of the
  58. last name.

  60. We have been constantly trying to obtain callsign databases from
  61. other countries but are discouraged by the result.  For example: We
  62. made an attempt to obtain the callsign database from Germany, but
  63. were told that the "exclusive publishing rights" to the information
  64. had already been sold to another firm.  We're truly sorry that
  65. countries around the world (and Germany is only one of many) consider
  66. the names and addresses of their radio amateurs to be private
  67. property that may be sold to the highest bidder.  QRZ will continue
  68. to publish only callsign data that is in the public domain, so that
  69. costs will remain affordable to the greatest number of amateurs.

  75. QRZ nor Walnut Creek CDROM do not edit or update the FCC data files.
  76. If the information contained in the QRZ Ham Radio CDROM is incorrect
  77. for your callsign, then you must contact the FCC to get the
  78. information changed.  The best way to do this is to fill out a 610
  79. form and mail it in to the FCC.  If the FCC receives the changes in
  80. time, the corrected information will be on the next edition of the
  81. QRZ CDROM.

  85. *** Shareware, Info and Mod Files Update ***
  86.  
  87. We've made a major effort to improve the quantity, quality and
  88. freshness of our shareware data files.  With this edition we're now
  89. shipping over 7,000 files with all new index files.

  91. One of the reasons that we've made such an improvement in the
  92. shareware content is that we've now put up an FTP Server on the
  93. Internet (ftp.qrz.com).  If you want to contribute shareware or
  94. demonstration software to the next edition of QRZ, I encourage you to
  95. FTP your material to ftp.qrz.com. You should login with user id
  96. anonymous while using your e-mail address as the password.  The
  97. shareware material is all located in the /pub directory.

  99. If you're into one of the World Wide Web (WWW) browsers such as
  100. Mosaic or Netscape, you'll want to check out http://www.qrz.com for
  101. an on-line catalog and access to the FTP Server as well as an
  102. on-line, interactive version of the QRZ Callsign Database.

  106. *** Coming Attractions ***
  107.  
  108. As the QRZ Callsign database grows, we're constantly looking for ways
  109. to make it better.  Here are a few of the thing which you'll probably
  110. be seeing on future editions of the QRZ Ham Radio CDROM:
  111.  
  112. Digital QSL Card Images - right now we're collecting QSL cards so
  113. when you display a callsign, you'll get an option to display the QSL
  114. Card - or any other photo - along with the other information.  We'll
  115. include one color digital image with each amateur's record who
  116. chooses to send a photo, callsign or .GIF file.  Due to space
  117. limitations, .GIF files must be no more than 25 kbytes in size.  You
  118. can mail your QSL card or photograph to QRZ (see address below) or
  119. you can ftp it to our FTP Server at ftp.qrz.com.  Please place all
  120. incoming FTP files in the /incoming directory.  If you want your card
  121. or photo returned, please include an Self Addressed Stamped Envelope.
  122. Please make sure that your callsign appears either somewhere on the
  123. image or on the back side of the photo.

  125. E-Mail Addresses - As more and more people get connected to the
  126. various networks, the list of amateurs with valid e-mail addresses
  127. grows ever larger.  We will gather E-Mail addresses from Internet
  128. news groups and from those who correspond with QRZ.  If you don't
  129. frequent the usenet news systems, send an e-mail to email@qrz.com and
  130. ask that we add your e-mail address.  This includes packet radio, BBS
  131. and Internet e-mail addresses.  Please do not send e-mail addresses
  132. via postcards or letters - if you can't reach us via e-mail then your
  133. e-mail address can't be used.  If you have more than one e-mail
  134. address, send only two at most.  If you send us more than two e-mail
  135. addresses, then we'll pick the ones to use.  Your e-mail address
  136. registration message should look like this:

  140. If you don't include your callsign in the message, it will be
  141. discarded.  Please don't expect a personal response from the
  142. email@qrz.com address.  You will receive a confirmation that your
  143. message arrived.  If the confirmation bounces, then we won't use the
  144. address.

  146. Macintosh Support - This edition contains an experimental Macintosh
  147. program, qrz_mac.hqx, which you may use with a macintosh to lookup
  148. callsigns.  It's still under development by a volunteer programmer,
  149. but we thought it important enough to include as a sample in this
  150. version.

  156. The QRZ Ham Radio CDROM is now the official callsign database for
  157. GENIE online information service.  Look for us in the Radio
  158. Roundtable discussion

  160. QRZ.COM continues to grow.  We now offer an FTP Server (ftp.qrz.com),
  161. a WWW Server (http://www.qrz.com) with an online callbook server.
